Book a guided hiking tour to the border cairn of Norway, Sweden and Finland. We hike along the Norway - Finland border and return via Kilpisjärvi, Finland.
Book a guided tour for your own group of 2-7 people. With a private guide, you don't need to worry about being faster or slower than other people, and you will always have the guide's full attention.
On this hiking tour, you have two options to choose from; 22 km hike or 11 kilometre hike and a boat tour back.
We start by 50 km drive from Skibotn to the Finnish border. The hike to the border cairn follows a route along the Norway - Finland border. Along the route, your guide will tell you about local history, geology as well as the flora and fauna - not forgetting the stories about the life today in the region. There are lynxes and wolverines, as well as some rare arctic plants in the region and your guide can show you some glacier buttercups or the leftovers of a wolverine's dinner. It is extremely rare to encounter with either of these predators. Protecting our fragile environment is important to us, so all our trips follow the leave nothing - take nothing but photos policy.
The hike to the border cairn take 3-4 hours. You can choose to hike back another 11 km via the Malla Strict Nature Reserve trail or take a boat tour back to Kilpisjärvi village from where we return back to the starting point by car. The hike is not very demanding, the terrain is fairly even arctic tundra. There are a few rocky or steep hills along the route.
You need to bring good hiking shoes and wind proof clothing. Layered clothing is advised, as even in the warm summer days the weather can change suddenly. Also bring a water bottle and additional snacks if you wish. Guide will bring a packed lunch (for example a large sandwich and a fruit) and hot drinks. Make sure you let us know of any diet restrictions.
Availability depends on weather conditions. Trails are usually passable in June, but there often are some snow remains on the trail still in July.
